The Tyra platforms have been at the core of Denmark’s energy infrastructure for 30 years, processing 90% of the nation’s natural gas production. As a responsible energy provider, TotalEnergies is investing 21 billion Danish kroner to redevelop the Tyra platforms in the Danish North Sea to support Denmark and Europe’s transition towards a low-carbon energy future. The redeveloped Tyra will be a high-tech production and export center that will secure gas supply for many years ahead. At peak production, the redeveloped Tyra will produce enough gas for what corresponds to 1.5 million Danish homes. Following completion in 2022, the new Tyra platform is expected to deliver approximately 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, equating to over 200 million BOE over the next 25 years.


TotalEnergies is committed to the long-term development of the Danish offshore sector. The Tyra Redevelopment Project project will not only promote economic and social benefits, like state taxes and jobs, but it will become a catalyst for other development opportunities in the North Sea. One of the aims of the Tyra Redevelopment Project is to pave the way for new investments from the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC) partners and third-party tiebacks. Moreover, TotalEnergies hopes to add to our reserves by assessing known areas near Tyra and exploring new opportunities nearby.


The execution of the Tyra Redevelopment Project is both a global and local effort. In addition to fabricating installations in both Europe and Asia, project efforts are being executed locally in Esbjerg, and offshore in the Danish North Sea. The redevelopment project started in 2018, with the first steel cut on the new platform. Following a safe and well-executed offshore campaign, the Tyra field’s production was temporarily suspended in September 2019 to allow the next steps in the redevelopment project to take place.

TYRA removal

The scope of work for the Tyra Redevelopment Project includes removing old facilities, modifying existing facilities, and installing new features. The two existing process and accommodation platforms will be replaced by one new process platform and one new accommodation platform. The four wellhead platforms and two riser platforms will have their jackets extended by 13 meters, and the current topsides will be replaced. Learn more about the removal project here.

Jacket installation

The jackets are the first new structures that are installed at the Tyra field. With the jacket installation, we are tuning yet an important corner in the project as we lay the foundation for the redeveloped field. The new Tyra will be a state-of-the-art facility ensuring efficient production and enhanced safety. With the use of new technology and modernized working processes, TotalEnergies anticipates that Tyra’s operational efficiency will increase from its current average of around 80% to more than 90% after launching. The new technologies and methodologies that will be integrated with the redeveloped Tyra platforms include:

  • Sensors that continuously collect data about critical equipment from around 100,000 data points.
  • Digital and online tools to monitor performance and improve maintenance.
  • Handheld digital devices for offshore employees to have constant access to systems, data, drawings, etc., as well as onshore specialist support.
  • Big data and shared data availability for both onshore and offshore staff to foster better collaboration, insights, and analytics.

Utilizing such efficient infrastructure and modern technology, the Tyra Redevelopment Project also supports TotalEnergies' vision of making our operations more sustainable.


The vision for TotalEnergies' climate strategy is to mitigate climate change issues while meeting energy demands. The Tyra Redevelopment Project is an important part of realizing that vision. The platform is designed to minimize the environmental footprint of our Danish North Sea operations. In fact, TotalEnergies expects that the redeveloped Tyra will reduce 30% of CO2 emissions, 90% of flaring, and improve overall operational energy efficiency. At the same time, redeveloping Tyra is also important because natural gas is a cornerstone of TotalEnergies' climate strategy. TotalEnergies intends to make natural gas a bigger part (60% within 20 years) of our oil and gas mix.


Another exciting component of the Tyra Redevelopment Project is the new accommodation platform. The Tyra accommodation platform has been designed in close collaboration with offshore workers to create a home away from home. The redesign provides each employee with their own cabin, much like a hotel room. Additionally, the new platform will have an outdoor recreation area, catering facilities, cinema and a well-equipped mess hall. Of course, safety, efficient workflows and general employee well-being were also key focus features of the platform’s design.


The original Tyra platform started production in 1984 and has since been complimented by several satellite platforms. However, due to subsidence, redevelopment is necessary. Subsidence is a natural consequence of continuously extracting oil and gas from gas fields over decades. That extraction causes the hydrocarbon pockets in those gas fields to collapse and the seabed to sink. The seabed below the Tyra platforms has sunk nearly five meters since 1984. As a result, the gap between the sea and the Tyra platforms’ decks was reduced. This reduction ultimately means redevelopment is necessary to keep both crew and equipment safe, as well as keep production efficient.
