TotalEnergies EP Denmark and HUB Ocean forge alliance to advance nature and biodiversity insights

Copenhagen/Oslo, 18  December, 2025.

TotalEnergies EP Denmark has entered into co-development agreement with HUB Ocean to strengthen marine research and conservation efforts in the North Sea and beyond.

The partnership builds on core capabilities from both organizations. One year ago, TotalEnergies EP Denmark released more than four decades of marine data through the North Sea Environment Portal. HUB Ocean is developing Ocean Sensitive Areas, a solution that consolidates fit-for-purpose data on ecosystems, habitats, species, migration routes, and spawning areas, making this information actionable for the private sector.

Together, the organizations aim to advance transparency, accelerate scientific understanding, and safeguard marine ecosystems.

A critical step for ocean science
Only 3% of public ocean biodiversity data comes from industry today. If companies shared more of what they already have, it would make a monumental difference in improving scientific mapping of the ocean and strengthening the global knowledge base societies rely on to protect and restore it.

By combining and exchanging datasets, TotalEnergies Denmark and HUB Ocean seek to deepen understanding of nature and habitats.

Laurence Janssens, COO, HUB Ocean:
“Our mission is to change the fate of the ocean by unleashing the power of data, technology, and collaboration. By partnering with TotalEnergies EP Denmark, we’re taking a critical step in understanding how EP sector can leverage nature and biodiversity data from beyond its immediate area of operations and create enhanced assessment of ocean nature sensitivities and risks.”

Katrina Povidisa-Delefosse, Senior Environment Advisor, TotalEnergies EP Denmark
“The ocean is our working environment, and taking care of it is a responsibility we take seriously. Sharing our data with Hub Ocean is yet another step in contributing to global knowledge about marine life and inspire others in the industry to do the same.”

Building on the North Sea Environment Portal
In 2024, TotalEnergies EP Denmark, as operator of the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC), and DHI launched the North Sea Environment Portal. For the first time, comprehensive data on seabed conditions, biodiversity, and environmental impacts of oil and gas platforms was gathered in one portal and made available to researchers, authorities, and decision-makers.

The portal enables visualization and analysis of previously inaccessible data, helping stakeholders understand how offshore platforms can serve as habitats for fish and marine mammals. This knowledge is critical for designing future energy infrastructure - such as offshore wind farms and carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects - with maximum consideration for marine ecosystems.
