The campaign marks an important step in assessing and maturing Dagny and Inez for future CO₂ storage and provides essential data for the continued development of the projects. The two sites are expected to become among the largest CO₂ storage facilities in Denmark, with a combined potential storage capacity of 335 million tonnes of CO₂ over its lifetime.
The surveys were carried out in close coordination with relevant authorities and the fishing industry, with careful consideration for the marine environment and safety throughout the campaign.
“Developing safe and scalable CO₂ storage requires a detailed understanding of the geology and environmental conditions at each site. The data collected during this campaign gives us important data to further assess Dagny and Inez and plan the infrastructure needed for potential future CO₂ storage,” said Martin Rune Pedersen, Country Chair of TotalEnergies Denmark.
CCS is a key technology for reducing emissions from hard-to-abate industries where electrification and energy efficiency alone are not sufficient. By capturing CO₂ from industrial activities and transporting it for safe and permanent geological storage, CCS can support industrial decarbonization and contribute to Denmark’s and Europe’s climate objectives.
“Large-scale CO₂ storage will have an important role in supporting industries with limited alternatives for reducing their emissions. By developing storage capacity in the Danish North Sea, we aim to support industrial decarbonization in Denmark and across Northern Europe while contributing to the development of a broader European CCS value chain.”
Dagny and Inez form part of the broader Bifrost CCS development, which aims to establish safe, permanent and scalable CO₂ storage beneath the Danish North Sea. The work builds on TotalEnergies’ extensive offshore and subsurface expertise in Denmark, as well as its international portfolio of CCS projects, including Northern Lights in Norway, Aramis in the Netherlands and the Northern Endurance Partnership in the United Kingdom. Together, these projects contribute to the development of large-scale CO₂ transport and storage solutions across Europe. Northern Lights was the first commercial provider of cross-border CO₂ transport and storage services in Europe and has, among others, been selected to store CO₂ captured from Danish power plants in Avedøre and Asnæs.
The survey campaign at Dagny and Inez was carried out using the MV Ocean Observer, an 80-metre multi-role survey vessel equipped with specialized geophysical and seismic survey equipment. The campaign combined three types of offshore investigations:
Bifrost is an EU‑designated Project of Common Interest (PCI) developing an open and scalable CO2 transport and storage network in the Danish North Sea. Delivered through two projects – Harald & Dagny, and Inez – it will connect industrial emitters in Denmark and across Northern Europe to safe, permanent offshore CO2 storage.
With operations targeted around 2030, Bifrost is expected to store up to 335 million tons of CO2 over its lifetime, forming a cornerstone of a future European carbon storage hub.
TotalEnergies has been active in Denmark for over 50 years and is among the country’s leading energy companies producing more than 80% of the oil and 90% of the gas in the Danish North Sea. TotalEnergies operates the Danish Underground Consortium with a 43.2% share together with partners BlueNord (36.8%) and Nordsøfonden (20%). With approximately 1,000 employees based in Copenhagen, Esbjerg, and offshore locations, the Company makes a significant contribution to Denmark’s energy supply, economy, and employment. As a multi-energyan integrated energy business, TotalEnergies in Denmark is looking to develop a renewables portfolio and advancing its Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) activities in support of Europe’s low-carbon transition.
TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company that produces and markets energies: oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gases, renewables and electricity. Our more than 100,000 employees are committed to provide as many people as possible with energy that is more reliable, more affordable and more sustainable. Active in about 120 countries, TotalEnergies places sustainability at the heart of its strategy, its projects and its operations.
