Energy Explorers – Work Experience Week in Esbjerg

In November, TotalEnergies Esbjerg welcomed local Energy Explorers from grades 8-10 from multiple of the municipalities’ schools. They spent their work experience week with us getting to know the many facets of our industry. Giving TotalEnergies Esbjerg a chance to showcase its focus on safety, sustainability and responsibility in operations, ensuring the students left with a lasting impression of future career paths awaiting them down the line.

Shadowing real practice and expertise

Most of the Energy Explorers agreed that the most exciting part of their week was opportunity to meet, see and hear how different departments work, and what their day-to-day operations entail. The Energy Explorers shadowed different departments such as Legal, Finance and Business Services, and Engineering & Construction within Field Operations.

Thea, from Esbjerg Realskole grade 10 felt it was great opportunity to learn and be inspired, even though she described as the work as “difficult” and “complex”. Multiple Energy Explorers went into Engineering and Construction with Hugo, Fourfeldtskolen grade 9, and Anton, Bakkeskolen grade 9, shadowing the structural engineering department. Here they got the chance to experience the technical aspects of structural engineering, which made a lasting impression on both.

In the harbour

The Energy Explorers did not spend the entire week in-office, as they toured our onshore warehouses, experiencing firsthand to the complexity of ensuring everything makes it our colleagues working offshore. They also boarded the Esvagt vessel Heidi, which is used to supply our offshore installations in the North Sea. On board, the Energy Explorers got a guided tour from one of the crew, who showcased the vessel from the engine room, to mess hall, living quarters and the bridge, with the help of his colleagues on board.

Jonathan, Fourfeldtskolen grade 8, described the day as being “Very exciting. It was really cool to see how the ship worked and what went into making sure it stayed active. The coolest part was the engine room, where we had the chance to see all the components running the ship.”

The many paths that lie ahead

Our Energy Explorers represent how we at TotalEnergies can spark inspiration in children during their school years. Opportunities such as this one, where we can showcase our industry, our processes and how we operate are a key part of our community and STEM outreach.

“The program was designed to show that having a fixed career path at 15 is uncommon. We want to encourage students to follow their passions and trust their instincts when shaping their future. Ultimately, the goal is to help them see that curiosity and doing something you like often lead to the most rewarding opportunities.” - HR Business Partner, Anette Kierkegaard
