TotalEnergies works in partnership with Uganda and Tanzania to extract and transport oil and gas in the two countries. The resources are sourced from fields in Western Uganda and conveyed through Tanzania via an electrified underground pipeline.
As a responsible European partner, we contribute to improved local conditions by
  • Higher standard of living: We contribute to improving the countries’ standard of living through local job creation, increased education, and better housing,
  • Biodiversity gains: We prioritize protecting the countries’ unique nature and wildlife,

TotalEnergies creates local jobs and ensures skill training
It is a high priority that the project generates local jobs and that locals are trained to carry on the project. We also strive to use local suppliers where possible.

Modern houses
Like many infrastructure projects worldwide, the Tilenga and EACOP projects require land acquisition and expropriations.
The process of ensuring adequate compensation for affected groups is carried out by TotalEnergies and EACOP on behalf of the Ugandan and Tanzanian governments. It is conducted in accordance with the standards set by the International Finance Corporation, which is part of the World Bank.
TotalEnergies compensates the affected families with new and more modern houses with solar energy systems, a rainwater tank, and improved sanitary conditions.

Access to water and electricity

More than 4,000 people in the Buliisa area of Uganda have better access to drinking water thanks to boreholes we have built. Access to water has particularly positive implications for women and girls, who previously walked between 10 and 20 km to fetch water for households.
For better access to electricity, TotalEnergies has signed two agreements on the development of renewable energy projects with both Uganda and Tanzania. Additionally, we have offered 8,000 solar lamps to local communities.

Human rights must be respected

The project’s suppliers are required to respect TotalEnergies’ values in terms of human rights, our anti-bribery policy, and safety standards.
In TotalEnergies we react when we become aware of potentially critical conditions. For example, we have responded when activists are arrested, and a letter has been sent to Uganda’s president expressing our concern about lack of freedom of expression. We are aware of the sensitive areas in which we operate.

Protection of Uganda’s unique nature and wildlife

Uganda’s unique nature must be protected, and therefore TotalEnergies’ ambition is to increase biodiversity in the area. We restore forests and save endangered species, and overall, a ‘net-positive’ impact is created – meaning it is our clear ambition that nature is left in a better state than when the project began.
